Biographical Note
May-Floyd and Gene Shumate were married in May 1938 in Des Moise, IA. In 1955, May-Floyd and Gene left Iowa with their two children to move to RExburg, Idaho. There, May-Floyd and Gene operated the only radio station, KRXK.
Prior to operating KRXK, Gene covered the organization of the United Nations in San Francisco (1945) represented the Marine Corps on Armed Forces Radio and covered football broadcasts for CBS (1946-47). In Idaho, he created radio editorials for the Intermountain region and covered the Idaho State Legislature for PBS.
May-Floyd, too, had prior radio experience. She worked as a monologist and copy writer for KSO-KRNT in Des Moines and free-lanced as a performer on various "soap opera" radio programs.
At KRKX in RExburg, the Shumates managed the station and ran radio shows, like "Mr. and Mrs. Shumate," "booktime," and editorials. They eventually retired in Salmon, Idaho and San Diego.
