Collection consists of private company and federal reports and assessments, mostly photocopies relating to Sunshine Mine fire of May 2, 1972. The fire was one of the largest mine disasters in the United States resulting in the deaths of 91 miners.

Historical Note
Sunshine Mining Company was organized in 1921. New York interests provided financial support to make Sunshine Mining Company one of the largest silver producers in the country. Over the years, other mining companies and foreign investors bought into the company. The company was one of the largest producers of silver in the United States.
