Biographical Note
Herman Work was born in McCoysville, Pennsylvania, August 18, 1888. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor's degree in forestry in 1910 and a Master's degree in 1913. From 1910 until April of 1917 he was employed by the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada.
In April, 1917, he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to France as part of a forestry unit that supplied timber for the armed forces. Having stayed in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps Reserve after the end of World War I, he was recalled to active duty with the Corps of Engineers in World War II and served four years active duty. In 1946 he was released from active duty with the commission of Colonel in the reserves.
Mr. Work joined the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in 1919 as a professional forester and remained with the company until his retirement in 1953. He lived in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, New York and Staunton, Virginia. From 1946 until 1953 he was head of the company's resource survey work. Mr. Work was a member of the Society of American Foresters and the American Pulpwood Association. He was also active in his church and chairman of the Allegheny County school board.
