Idaho Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Nu State Collection

Alpha Nu State, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, was founded April 18, 1940. Its purpose was to promote excellence in education and women educator’s person al and professional growth. Idaho was organized over two days: the first initiation was held in Lewiston on April 18, and the second was held in Pocatello on April 20. There were fourteen state founders and ten initiates who became state members since there were no chapters. The state organization had to be established before any chapters could be formed. State meetings were held but no conventions. The first state convention was held in Boise in April 1942. The Alpha Chapter was established on April 26, 1943, in Boise, and Beta Chapter was organized in Pocatello two years later.

The Delta Gamma Society International has seven basic purposes that govern its program of work and study: 1) To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship 2) To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education 3) To advance the professional interest and position of women in education 4) To initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators 5) To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators 6) To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action 7) To inform the members of current economic, social, political, and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society (Modified from the Delta Kappa Gamma Idaho website)
