Biographical / Historical
John McMillan was born in Scotland in 1857. He came to the United States in 1881 and immediately headed west, settling first in Wyoming and later in Idaho in 1886. Upon moving to Idaho, he settled in Mayfield, Elmore County, where he was involved with his livestock business and raising sheep. He played a prominent role in the creation of the Idaho Wool Growers Association. He married his wife Clara in 1896. McMillan later moved to Boise, where he expanded his livestock and civic interests. He became a stockholder and president of the Idanha Company which built and owned the Idanha Hotel. Politically minded, he became a leader in the Republican party in Idaho and served as a member of the senate for Ada County in 1909 and as a representative from Elmore County. In 1910 he was commissioned as postmaster for Boise. He was a charter member of the Boise Lodge, B.P.O. of Elks and at one time was exalted ruler. John McMillan died in 1936.
