 Collection
Identifier: P1970-010

Content Description

This collection contains roughly 1,500 photographic prints and negatives from the estate of Murray Demetrius Badgley. Many of the images in this collection were captured by Badgley during his work for the United States Surveyor General office and include images of camping trips through the Boise National Forest, along the Payette and Salmon River area, and the Sawtooth Wilderness. Other prominent subjects include Arrowrock Dam, Yellowstone National Park, and Twin Springs, Idaho.

The vast majority of the contents are photographic negatives. These negatives were used to create photographic prints that appear in seven photo albums that are part of the collection.

Processing Information

The following was copied from the inventory list on file at the Idaho State Archives

"This photo collection was the work of Muarray D. Badgley of Boise. We received it as seven photo albums, some loose pagges, many loose pictures, and negatives. Most of the negatives had been numbered by Badgley and placed in envelopes of 25 with some identification on the outside. An effort was made to retain his numbering system by using his negative numbers with an IHS accession number added. The numbers 70-10.1 to 70-10.1150 are his numbers. From 70-10.1151 on the numbers wene assigned to pictures (including pictures in albums) and negatives which apparently were not numbered by Badgley. (It is possible that some of these did have Badgley numbers, but since we did not receive his collection intact, it is impossible to tell.)

As much as possible, negatives were matched to the album pictures and the negative numbers were noted on the page. All of the albums were given the number G-47, with the individual album then being assiined sub-numbers, i. e. G-47.l, G-47.2, etc. The loose album pages were designated G-47.8. Each album page was numbered. The register and the card catalogue indicate the location of pictures in the albums, i.e., negative no. 70-10.1077 is in album 6, page 1, which is indicated G-47.6, p. 1. Some loose pictures and pictures made by IHS from Badgley's negatives are mounted and in the regular picture file. This is also indicated in the register and in the card catalogue. There are also four pictures in the A picture file. Many duplicate prints, family and unidentified pictures and negatives are located in MS 305."

The prints and negatives described as being part of MS 305 were transferred into P1970-10 as part of a secondary processing effort by Reference Archivist Owen Prout in the fall of 2024. The transfer of these images has been indicated at the item level in this finding aid as a "Separated Materials" note.
