The Governor Kempthorne Papers collection contains 74 boxes with a range of topics and materials reflecting Governor Kempthorne’s tenure. The collection is organized as follows:

Biographical / Historical

Dirk Kempthorne is an American politician and public servant who has held numerous leadership positions at both state and national levels. Born on October 29, 1951, in San Diego, California, Kempthorne was raised in Spokane, Washington, and later moved with his family to San Bernardino, California. He graduated from San Gorgonio High School in 1970, where he served as Student Body President. Kempthorne attended San Bernardino Valley College before transferring to the University of Idaho, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1975. During his time at the University of Idaho, Kempthorne was elected President of the Associated Students.

Kempthorne's early career included the role of Executive Assistant to the Director of the Idaho Department of Lands (1976-1978) and Executive Vice President of the Idaho Home Builders Association (1978-1981). He served as Mayor of Boise from 1985 to 1992, which was followed by his election to the U.S. Senate, representing Idaho from 1993 to 1999. Kempthorne then served two terms as the 31st Governor of Idaho, from 1999 to 2006. As governor, he also held prominent leadership roles, including President of the Council of State Governments (2001), Chairman of the National Governors Association (2003-2004) and Chairman of the Western Governors’ Association (n.d.). In 2006, President George W. Bush appointed Kempthorne as the 49th U.S. Secretary of the Interior, a position he held until 2009. Following his time in the federal government, Kempthorne became President and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) in 2010.
