Biographical / Historical
William J. McConnell was Idaho's third governor and took office in January 1893. He was born in 1839 in Michigan and moved to the Payette Valley in 1863. After serving as a United States Deputy Marshall from 1865 to 1867, he served a short term as one of Idaho's senators, and then decided to run for governor. He was elected in 1892. During his four years the state had many issues to deal with, including enlarging the educational system, creating the state's system of administering irrigation, and continuing chapters in labor-management quarrels, including the Pullman Strike of 1894. Also the state went through a major depression along with the rest of the nation. McConnell did not seek reelection in 1896, and he died in 1925.
