History
Oneida County was established on January 22, 1864, by the Idaho Territorial Legislature and named after Oneida Lake in New York. Originally much larger, the county once encompassed a significant portion of southeastern Idaho before being reduced through the creation of surrounding counties. Malad City, founded by Mormon settlers in the 1860s, serves as the county seat. The county's early history is closely tied to railroad development, farming, livestock, and the settlement patterns of Latter-day Saint pioneers. Today, Oneida County retains its rural character and historical significance as one of Idaho’s original counties.
