History
Jefferson County, Idaho, was officially established in 1913, carved from Fremont County, with Rigby designated as the county seat. Early settlement began in the 1860s along the stagecoach route between Salt Lake City and Virginia City, with growth fueled by the arrival of the railroad in 1879. The area developed rapidly due to extensive irrigation canal systems that supported agriculture, especially potatoes and grain. Jefferson County is notable as the boyhood home of Philo T. Farnsworth, who developed the key concept behind electronic television while living near Rigby.
