History
The Idaho State Capitol Restoration Committee was created by the Idaho Legislature in the early 2000s to provide oversight and coordination for the restoration and expansion of the State Capitol. By the late 20th century, the historic Capitol, originally constructed between 1905 and 1920, faced serious structural, safety, and space concerns. Issues such as seismic vulnerability, outdated mechanical systems, and insufficient office space prompted lawmakers to authorize a comprehensive restoration project.
The committee’s work culminated in the Capitol Restoration and Expansion Project (2001–2010), which restored historic spaces, upgraded building systems, and added two underground wings to provide offices and hearing rooms. The successful completion of the project preserved Idaho’s most prominent public building while equipping it for continued legislative and governmental use in the 21st century.
