History
The Office of the Attorney General of Idaho was established in the state constitution of 1890 as one of Idaho’s elected executive offices. The Attorney General serves as the state’s chief legal officer, charged with representing Idaho in civil and criminal matters, providing legal advice to state agencies, and enforcing state law.
Over time, the office’s responsibilities have expanded beyond courtroom litigation to include consumer protection, natural resource law, criminal appeals, and administrative oversight. The Attorney General issues formal legal opinions to state officials, reviews legislation, and represents Idaho in both state and federal courts.
