History
The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) was formally established in 1974 as a state agency responsible for the custody, supervision, and rehabilitation of adult felony offenders in Idaho. Its creation centralized correctional administration under one statewide authority, replacing a patchwork of local and institutional oversight that had existed since Idaho’s territorial era.
Prior to 1974, the state’s correctional functions were managed primarily through the Idaho State Penitentiary, which began operations in 1872 under the jurisdiction of the Idaho Territorial Government.
