Biographical Note

John T. Morgan was born on November 25, 1831 in Hamburg, Erie County, New York. He graduated with a degree in law in 1856 from State Law School in Poughkeepsie, New York.

He moved to Illinois where he served in the legislature. On June 26, 1879 he was appointed by President Hayes to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Idaho Territory. He was reappointed by President Arthur and filled the position until 1885.

Morgan was removed from office by President Cleveland. He resumed private practice in Boise. In October 1890, he was elected Justice of the Supreme Court of Idaho and served until 1897. John Morgan died in 1910.
