Biographical Note

James Harrison Lowell was active in banking and irrigation in Southern Idaho. Born in New Bedford, MA in 1860, he attended school in Illinois and was engaged in teaching and farm work throughout California before moving to Idaho.

In 1893, Lowell moved to Roswell, Idaho to develop the Riverside Irrigation Canal along with A.J. Wiley, W.P. Hard, and D.W. Ross. He managed the canal until 1904. Thereafter, Lowell moved back and forth from Roswell to Caldwell, venturing into real estate and banking businesses. He founded Caldwell Banking and Trust (later Caldwell Commercial Bank) with former Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg and John C. Rice. James Harrison Lowell died in 1944.
